What can I say about Jim Profitt? I’ve known Jim since I was a kid in school, and knew Shirley from school too. I guess we really connected when I was in my 30s when my family had a traveling gospel bluegrass group, celebrating our fifth anniversary. I asked Jim, Shirley, Warren, and Betty if they would open for us on our fifth anniversary thing in Mason, Ohio and they graciously obliged. Then about five years ago, Jim and I hooked up again when we were going to the same church. He was the worship leader, and he asked me to sing alongside of him. Jim wanted to start a group and he asked me if I would be his sidekick. That’s when PROFITT started. Jim used to tell everyone that when he was a young boy, his mama and daddy took him to see me in concert which was a joke ha ha! He thinks he’s five years older than me, but he’s only four years older. Jim and I started singing back in 2021, traveling all over. We thought it was only going to be a weekend here and weekend there but ended up being every weekend. We felt God’s calling so we hit the road. We ended up cutting three CDs together. Had a wonderful time traveling. Jim had to retire from PROFITT at the beginning of 2025 due to health conditions and traveling every weekend was just too much for him, but God has blessed Profitt to go on as Poppy Road and now we have Bryan and Priscilla Glenn with us so God’s not finished yet!

I met Jim and Shirley in 2003 on their first Sonshine Gospel cruise with The Roarks. Actually, it was my first cruise ever. What impressed me about them was their honesty and sincerity to their craft and how genuine they were in everyday life. To me, it was like I had known them all my life, because they seemed like down home folks, even though they came from “somewhere up north”. Jim and I instantly hit it off with our love for gospel music, and because we were both musicians. As our friendship grew, I offered to put together a website for them, and they hired me on the spot. I got to listen to all their music, and I heard the great news of Jesus in every note of every song they sang. Jim could have been a country music sensation, but as he put it, “Gospel music chose me!” Shirley’s voice was velvety smooth and angelic, much like something you’d hear coming from an angel. I was completely devastated when Jim text me with the news that Shirley had passed away, so I called back to check on him. He briefly told me the events of that day, so I started talking about the good memories we shared singing together all those years.
I only met Warren and Betty one time before joining PROFITT and moving to Ohio, but when I got to know Betty (aka Mom), I could readily see where Jim got all his mannerisms lol.
Jim is my brother in every sense of the word, and singing with him has been a dream come true. Once he had to step back due to his health, I made a promise that as long as I’m able, I’m going to carry on his legacy with Poppy Road.
